EARLIEST Icewine HARVEST IN NIAGARA’S HISTORY

St. Catharines, Ontario. The 2005 Icewine harvest began today at 5:30pm at Henry of Pelham Family Estate Winery as the temperature dropped quickly in the late afternoon to below -8 °Celsius. The world famous dessert wine is made by harvesting naturally frozen-solid Riesling or Vidal grapes and then pressing them outside. It is a rare treat that is sought after around the world. Niagara produces the most Icewine in the world and is recognized as the best quality region for the wines production, receiving gold medals and best of shows consistently at competitions around the globe.

“By my records this is the earliest Icewine harvest in history. Typically we start in late December and go through January. To harvest in November – it’s unheard of,” said Matthew Speck, the young VP of Viticulture at Henry of Pelham Family Estate Winery and 21 year veteran in the fields.

“The quality looks great, particularly on our estate and neighboring vineyards. And it’s certainly a welcome blessing to bring the fruit in well before the holiday season.” said Daniel Speck, VP of Sales and Marketing for Henry of Pelham and co-owner of the winery with his brothers. “The harvest for table wines was 2 weeks early, and now this. Someone’s smiling on us.”

Henry of Pelham Icewine has won a medal at a major international wine competition every year since it began producing the rare nectar in the late 1980’s. As one of the pioneer producers its Icewine is available across Canada and around the world. This years Harvest will be available in the spring of 2006.

Icewine has become a Canadian Holiday Season tradition and is served on its own, with blue veined cheeses/aged cheddars, as dessert itself and most recently in two decadent drinks: the Icewine Martini and the Kir Catharine (using Henry of Pelhams’ renowned sparkling wine). Icewine is delicate and sweet with the natural flavors of apricots, nectarines and peaches. A truly great Icewine has refreshing tartness to balance the sweetness and will age for well over 10 years.
